Don't Wait for the New Year to Start a Fitness Journey. Do it Now.
Nov 20, 2022
We are at that time of year when it’s easy to lose sight of our goals that we set for ourselves earlier in the year. New Year’s resolutions are right around the corner, and it’s so easy to throw those old goals and aspirations to the back of your mind and focus on the holidays.
I’ll start in January, you say. It’s a clean slate, and I’ll be all in without the holiday distractions. But did you know that after 1 month of setting a new year’s resolution, 36% have already given up. And by 6 months that number jumps to 80% that have quit. Not very encouraging, if you ask me.
With that in mind, waiting till January doesn’t look so appealing. On top of the lousy follow through, there are some other reasons why starting now is a far superior choice.
New Gym Goers Make for Crowded Gyms
It’s a well known fact that one of the top New Year’s resolutions is centered around health and fitness. This makes for a really crowded gym during January and part of February. (Most fitness related resolutions drop off at Valentine’s Day.) Who wants to fight the crowds while also learning new equipment and fumbling through new workouts? Get an edge up by starting today and by January you’ll be a pro at navigating the gym. You’ll be able to walk in with confidence and know what you’re doing, instead of being completely overwhelmed.
6 Weeks Left
We have exactly 6 weeks left of 2022. You mean to tell me that you’re willing to ignore all the progress you could make in 6 weeks time? You’re willing to just ignore the new habits that could be created, the new zest for life you could feel from releasing all your stress through exercise, and the better sleep you could be getting?
Developing the habit and lifestyle of working out regularly could already be ingrained into your daily routine by January 1, if you’d start today.
You may think you’re setting yourself up for success by waiting till January. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season will be over and life will slow down a bit so you can focus on yourself more. But the reality is, by waiting till January you’re really just procrastinating. You’re not setting yourself up for any type of success by putting it off for another 6 weeks. Quite the opposite, in fact. You’ve subconsciously told yourself that you’re not worth being a priority, so how is that going to change come January and something new comes up that steals your time? Stop procrastinating and schedule time in your day today to make exercise a priority.
Show Up on Christmas Day With Confidence
By starting today with a regular exercise routine, by Christmas you’ll feel less stressed, less anxious, more confident, and less fatigued. Most of us enter the holiday season just the opposite, but by showing up consistently to exercise, you can change the norm and have a different holiday season than you’ve had in the past.
There is nothing magical about January 1st. Somehow we’ve tricked ourselves into believing that a switch will just flip in our brains on January 1st and we’ll suddenly be this person who goes to the gym every day and eats healthy with no effort. As amazing as that would be, that’s just not going to happen, and the amount of effort it takes today to start a new habit will be the same amount of effort it’s going to take after the new year.
Finish 2022 Strong
Coasting to the end of the year may sound nice, but that just means you get to play catch up after the first of 2023. Why not finish the year stronger than when you started? Take control of your 2022, instead of it controlling you. You have 6 weeks to show it (and everyone else) who’s boss.
The only reason you’re waiting is because of procrastination, and procrastination is a liar. By starting today, you’ll be so much further ahead. Your habits will be established, you’ll already feel confident in the gym when it’s full of newbies, and your progress will be starting to show long before all those who wait.
So let's get this party started! Finish 2022 like a boss!!!
